Over 50 musicians on stage and a fantastic crowd saw a very succesful evening for Save The Children Sweden gauranteed in Umea, Sweden on December 14th 2009. The bands Mullin Mallin, Appendix, Centipedes and Snakes, Arish, Suvi Avara as well as the Waldorf School Choir with Mikael Retsler ensured that there was an eclectic sound for all present. Eastern European, Swedish, Irish, Folk, Pop and new songs from BURNS and friends "Innocence Lost" resounded with an intense and uplifting energy. The audience participation was unequalled and the warmth was evident for all those on stage. Special Thanks to Save The Children, Saga Theater, Midgardskolan, Waldorf Skolan and all performers as well as audience who made it an evening to remember. There is currently a video being edited of the nights entertainment and will be available online when completed.

Brian explains the reasons by writing and recording the new album in Sweden and the inspiration behind the songs. The choice of musicians also gets a mention with over 15 musicians collaborating to produce an interesting and exciting voyage through the musical landscape of Norrland in Sweden.

In May 2009, the Ryan Report was published. There was a list of alleged child abuse incidents that had occurred over a period of decades in the Irish "industrial school" or reform system. Most of the children that were allegedly abused had never committed any crime nor were they guilty of any misdemeanor. There only crime for the most part was that they had no home, no parents that wanted them or couldn't keep them for various reasons.
After reading the report Brian Burns decided to try to write a song that would address the circumstances that these children went through. It is of course impossible to imagine on any real level what they must have and still endure. The song is in two parts. The first part Innocence Lost is an attempt to capture the loneliness, isolation and desperation felt by the children whilst the second part Fly Away is the enduring hope for freedom and escape from this dark place.On 12 December BURNS will release the new album in BURMANS music store in Umea, Sweden with a concert that evening in the Saga Theater in Umea. BURNS will be joined by several bands and friends that night on stage and all proceeds go to Save The Children Sweden (Rädda Barnen)

ARISH PRODUCTIONS December 2009BURNS AND FRIENDS will headline the line-up to play on the 12 December in Saga Theater in Umea for the benefit of Radda Barnen (Save The Children Sweden). The concert's proceeds will go to a project to be picked by Brian Burns and will be supervised by Radda Barnen Umea's office.
The decision to perform this concert was made after BURNS pencilled the title song for the new album "Innocence Lost" after reading two reports published in 2009. The first was the Ryan Report published in May in Ireland after an investigation into the alleged child abuse that took place in the industrial schools used in the reform system in Ireland. The second report was published by Radda Barnen following a study into the increase in poverty and especially child poverty in Sweden.
The very fact that these reports inspired the song "Innocence Lost" and the concert meant that the collaboration with Radda Barnen was the most logical and also gives the opportunity to highlight the excellent work this organisation and its employees do.

THE ALBUM COVER FOR "INNOCENCE LOST"
The new album “INNOCENCE LOST” will be distributed in Umea by BURMANS music store where BURNS will perform an acoustic concert at 12.00 on Saturday 12 December.
There will be a live radio broadcast on SR from HARRYS in Umea on Friday 11 December from 15.00 to 18.00 in the afternoon with a pre-release concert that evening in HARRYS by ARISH. All proceeds from the HARRYS concert will go to the South African School Project that HARRYS are supporting.
The official release concert will take place in Saga Theater, Umea at 19.00 on Saturday 12 December. There will be performances by Waldorf School Choir, Appendix, Arish, Mullin Mallin and Burns and friends. BURNS and friends will perform new songs from the album INNOCENCE LOST as well as some seasonal Christmas tunes together with the Waldorf School Choir.
Tickets will be available from BURMANS and Save The Children Sweden (RADDA BARNEN) as well as door sales on the night.
All proceeds from the Saga Theater concert will go to Save The Children/RADDA BARNEN.

The ARISH "On The Road" tour continued on SEPTEMBER 5th with 2 concerts in Lulea, Sweden for the Kulturnatta Festival. ARISH had been selected to represent Umea as part of a cultural cooperation between the two northern towns in Sweden.
The biggest crowd in four years attended the outdoor concert in front of Berlins Store in main square Lulea (located on the Arctic Circle in north Sweden). ARISH have begun recording their new album in Umea over the past couple of weeks and delighted the crowd with some new songs that will be released on the album in November 2009.
There were two performances with the lads taking to the stage in the Kulturhuset (Cultural/Arts Center) later that evening. There were numerous encores and a hugely positive response that means that it wont be long before ARISH will return to Lulea to perform!
ARISH wants to thank all the people from Kulturnatta in Lulea and Umea, Owe and all at Berlins in Lulea as well as everyone who came out to support the band!

The ARISH "On The Road" tour continued on Tuesday 4th August with a concert in Nolia, Umea, Sweden.
There was large crowds and glorious sunshine as ARISH played a fast a furious set to the audience delight.
ARISH wants to thank Stora Nolia Management especially Jan Olof Sandberg and promoters Tiljan as well as everyone who came out to support the band!

In a busy week ARISH traveled from Ovik in south Vasterbotten to Holmon Island off the north coast to perform new and old songs from their repetoire. There were performances in the new O Learys in Umea ( a new complex on four levels including a pool stage-side!), Harrys in Ovik and Panget on Holmon Island (3 performances in 2 days).
There were great crowds and fantastic atmosphere at all the gigs and ARISH wants to thank everyone who came out to support the band!

Blue skies, 30 degrees and plenty of sunshine for the ARISH concert during the SUMMER IN THE CITY FESTIVAL in Umea, Sweden.
ARISH were joined on stage by Gunnar Lingegard from Bordun, Sofia Hogstadius from Gothenburg, members of Mullin Mallin and Maria SK from the Rejoice Gospel Choir.
In a lively set, there was a unique performance of the new single "Sandcastles" with a beautiful choir arrangement by Mullin Mallin.

The Official Video for the New Single "SANDCASTLES" written by Brian Burns in December 2008 for his recently deceased Uncle Sean Murray RIP. It was recorded in Umea, Sweden in March 2009 by ARISH. The new double single released at the Kulturnatta Festival in Umea in May 2009 also includes the track "ON THE ROAD (PAHAROVA).
The song "SANDCASTLES" explores the beauty and innocence of youth and the loss of that innocence on getting older and moving on to new experiences and adventures in life.

ARISH released their new single "On The Road/Sandcastles" at the Kulturnatta Festival 2009 in Sweden. ARISH and BURNS were joined by 20 artists from 8 different bands and the Umea Folk Music Initiative on stage. Unfortunately, the organisers of the festival had some technical and arrangement issues and ARISH and Friends decided to stage a spontaneous acoustic session. As you can see from clips and photos a great time was had by all! On behalf of everyone in ARISH and our friends we would like to thank all the people who came to the events and apologise to those who were left in the cold so long. We hope you enjoyed the evening despite the hitches.

It has been announced that the NEW Double Single "ON THE ROAD / SANDCASTLES" by ARISH will be released at Kulturnatta 2009 in Umeå. Available EXCLUSIVELY from BURMANS, Umeå, Sweden and at www.burnsmusic.net. The song "ON THE ROAD” (aka "PAHAROVA") has been receiving incredible response at all live performances that ARISH have given in the last year. The song is the true story of a midnight drive that Brian Burns took through Norrbotten from a small village called PAHAROVA to Gallivare on Midsommar night. There is a special guest appearance on the single by banjo player Thord Hird (Blue Mountain Music). The driving tempo is matched by vivid imagery of the landscapes that form Swedish Lapland. "SANDCASTLES" is a new song dedicated to the memory of Brian Burns uncle Sean Murray who died in December 2008. The song tells of the beauty of innocence and the loss of that innocence when growing up. There is a beautiful string arrangement to be performed live by Umeå FolkMusik Iniativ at Kulturnatta. There will be an open Pre-launch party at Pipes of Scotland on Friday, 22.05.2009. There is large number expected and although entry is free, a limited number allowed entry.

Om Umeå Kulturnatta Årets största Kulturevent i Umeå! Det massiva programmet släpps i sin helhet 16 maj.
Den 23 maj 2009 firar Umeå Kulturnatta 5 år. Nu är arbetet i full gång med planeringen av årets mest omfattande kulturhändelse i Umeå. Kulturnatta är resultatet av att över 100 olika arrangörer och organisationer samarbetar i att arrangera bortåt 300 kulturhändelser under 1 dygn i Umeå centrum. Årets stora gästartist är Alannah Myles (Canada) som kommer för en unik spelning i norr. Som alltid bjuder Kulturnatta på mängder av händelser, från stort till smått. Bland årets utstickare kan nämnas till exempel: ”Bönder berättar” i Vänortsparken (arrangerat av LRF), unga Musik-Direkt vinnarna ”Sorry Let’s Bowl” på huvudscenen, improshow med Skuggteatern på Sagateater, samt en performance på stan med Balettakademien och Rut m.fl. BURNS performed together with ARISH in BURMANS in Umea for World Music Store Day. This is an event organised globally to promote music stores who are suffering due to illegal downloading of music from the internet.
BURMANS is the oldest music store in Sweden, celebrating its 60th anniversary this year in September.
There were numerous bands performing with BURNS and ARISH including WOLFMAN JACK to mention just one. The event was well attended by locals and media.

There was plenty of local media interest in the concert with a new CD and new arrangements of songs and tunes on show for the first time.

BURNS performed the new song "The Grey and I" written during Brian's participation of the Finnmarklopet (the worlds most northern dog sled race) over 1000km from Alta on the Atlantic coast of Norway to Russia and back.
This amazing adventure is one of the toughest endurance trials for both dog and man and involves one week of near non-stop racing at temperatures of -25 degrees and extreme conditions.
Brian was part of the Arne Oddvar Nilsen team that was representing Norway during the race.

This is the official website for Umeas bid to be City of Culture for 2014. It is currently in the final with Lund in the south. The decision is in September.

We just got back from Sweden where we were shooting the video for ND (03-10/11) in Umea, Tavelsjo and Hemavan in Sweden. There was also plenty of media work during the shooting and an impromptu gig at Scharinska in Umea that was also taped for the video. You can read (swedish only!) interview between Brian and Umea.se in Sweden at the link below as well as checking out photos from the helicopter we used in mountains on Norwegian border. . During the interview Brian discusses the making of the video for ND in Sweden including the use of helicopters and light aircraft for the aerial shots in the mountains on the Norway/Sweden border.

BURNS is a collaboration of various musicians from different countries who have come together to perform the songs of Brian Burns.
Brian has been a singer/songwriter for 16 years. Born in Liverpool, he grew up in Ireland and performed as singer/frontman in bands such as Scream Vision and Seakings Dream in Dublin in the nineties before moving to France in 1993. Here Brian developed his craft and learned guitar to assist in his song writing.
From France Brian moved to Germany where he would spend the best part of 10 years touring all major German cities and a few places in between. Performing solo and with his bands ANISH (Traditional and original) and BURNS (first time in Bremen in 2000), Brian played in major festivals, concerts and gigs throughout Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, USA etc.
In 2005, Brian moved to the polar town of Umea in north Sweden. Here Brians songwriting takes on a new slant and is clearly inspired by the wilderness and landscapes that is Lappland, the Arctic Circle and northern Sweden generally. The single Northern Dream is a culmination of these images and places in word and song.
In the summer of 2008, Brian returned to Ireland to work on his latest songs with musicians from past and present including Ken Murphy from ANISH and various people from PICTUREHOUSE. The single was recorded in WESTLAND studios, Dublin (Christy Moore, The Corrs, Shania Twyane etc.) and in Gavin Ralstons, SILVERWOOD studios in Wicklow.
The single will include Northern Dream, both in english and swedish Norrland Drom and another new song Where were you? recorded acoustically in Silverwood. These songs and others will be played in their recorded versions for the first time in concerts in Ireland, Sweden and Germany in December 2008.
The single will be available from December 2008 on www.burnsmusic.net and www.cdbaby.net and also at www.tunecore.com and also in hardcopy from specially chosen outlets in Ireland, Sweden and Germany.
